![]() We hope the city recovers enough to see you next year at the NZ GMA Conference. The best to you all of you in your recovery. It is great to see the club camaraderie in helping members still get access to play wherever they can in the region. The entire golf industry has banded to together to help the hard hit clubs get through this difficult time. ![]() The course is out of action for at least 3 weeks. The clubhouse, pro shop and flat has major structural damage.Īt this stage we are unsure how long the course will be out of action but we will be trying to get at least 9 holes open for play as soon as possible. There is no power at this stage to any part of the course. At this stage we are unsure of the damage to the irrigation system but we assume that we have major repairs to the pipe work and electrical cable. One of our wells has cracked and is flowing at the surface with positive well pressure. ![]() We have liquefaction all over the course with at least 5 greens with major damage with silt, mounding and subsidence.Īll fairways have some form of liquefaction, with some quite severe. Major structural damage has occurred to the clubhouse and course, with liquefaction and mounding across two-thirds of the course. The course is closed until further notice. The Pro Shop appears to be OK.Work will start on cleaning up the course on Thursday 24 Feb and an inspection of the buildings is awaited. The very good news is that no one was injured and valuable trophies, Sir Bob Charles memorabilia and computer records have been saved. There are also serious structural cracks in the building. In the clubhouse, all four chimneys and part of the external wall facing the 18th green have collapsed. Holes 1, 2, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18 & the practice area have suffered from liquefaction and damage is suspected to the irrigation pumps and pipes. The Tuesday 22 February earthquake has unfortunately caused significant damage to the course and the 84 year old clubhouse. The club house has been red-stickered but catering facilities will be set up in the pro shop. However, we are committed to being back on Shirley by 12 March at the latest all things being equal and no unforeseen circumstances arising. We are not yet in receipt of power, water, sewerage or telephones so accordingly the course proper remains closed. Needless to say there are a few more humps and bumps than there were just over a week ago. Staff and contractors have largely removed all of the sand from the fairways and later this week will be moving on to the remedial stage of levelling and re-sowing. The inside paddock has been subject to localised liquefaction particularly on 1 & 18, but also affecting 2, 17, 12 & 15. ![]() The Club has not been as fortunate as it was during the 4 September quake. Here is a short summary of damage for a few of the really hard hit courses in the area. There is a really interesting phenomenon that can occur when the ground moves as much as it did in Christchurch called liquefaction. Many of you may think (I was never aware of this prior), it’s a golf course what kind of real damage can occur to the actual golf course itself. The Christchurch Golf Clubhouse, oldest in area, had some major damage. The major damage was suffered by clubs on the eastern side of Christchurch, notably:Ĭhristchurch Golf Club Waimairi Golf Club Rawhiti Golf Club Tai Tapu Golf Club Avondale Golf Club and Hagley Golf Club. A number of the golf clubs in Christchurch have received considerable damage although there were no injuries suffered by any golfers playing at the time or golf staff from the earthquake. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the golf industry in New Zealand who has felt the impact of Mother Nature in a muchĭifferent way than Australian clubs. ![]()
